Your bathroom should be a relaxing place for you to bathe or shower in after a long day. A big part of making your bathroom a great place to be in is the decoration, and that includes the tiles.
It’s easy to get carried away with choosing tiles for your bathroom, and before you know it you’ve got a crazy design that will wind you up rather than help you wind down.
So how can you choose the best bathroom tiles? We’ve got 5 tips to help you.
1. Pick the tile you know you must have first
When you’re remodelling your bathroom, the chances are that you’ve got an idea about what you want the main tile to be. It could be a special design or accent tile that you know you absolutely must have.
So pick that must-have tile and use it as the starting point for all the other tiles that you want to use in your new bathroom.
2. Stick with one patterned or coloured tile
There are so many brightly coloured and patterned tiles to choose from that it can be easy to fall into the trap of making your bathroom look too busy. Choose just one and make it the showstopper.
This bathroom really has the wow factor, using small silver tiles to create a sparkle along the shower wall. The rest of the bathroom is kept in a simple white, which makes the showstopper tile stand out more.
3. Choose no more than 3 different tiles
As we said, pick a must-have tile and design the rest of the bathroom around it. If your must-have tile is a brightly coloured or patterned tile, consider adding more subtle tiles to use as your accent tiles. It’s a good idea to choose no more than 2 other tiles to go with your must-have tile.
There are plenty of different ways to use tiles in your bathroom. You could use a floor tile, a wall tile and an accent tile. Or you could use a wall tile just for around the shower or bath – it’s up to you.
4. Decide whether you want low-maintenance bathroom tiles
If you hate cleaning (who loves it?), it’s best not to choose natural stone bathroom tiles. This is because they are porous, so need sealing, and will also hold on to dirt much more easily. For low-maintenance tiles, choose porcelain or ceramic. You could also choose glass, but beware of moisture marks.
If you would like to use natural stone in the bathroom, it’s a good idea to use it as a floor tile instead as it won’t get as wet.
5. Mix up large and small tiles
A current trend in bathroom tiles is using large scale tiles on bathroom floors. So if you decide to do this, you could use the same tile in smaller sizes in another area of the bathroom. This creates a great look that can add the feeling of more space in the room.
